Samak Laban’s Archive

Samak Laban’s archive keeps a record of the creative and cultural activity taking place within our space and around us in Downtown Cairo.

Over time, this record traces how that activity develops with and through the people contributing to it, the ideas being explored, and the ways they connect, change and lead to something else.

Archiving, for us, is also part of building community. There’s value in being able to look back at what we’ve done together, who has been part of it, and having something tangible to refer back to and build from.

At the same time, it becomes a record of the space itself — our spatial and furniture design being lived with, moved around, gathered around and used in different ways over time.

The Archive is where that past, present and future can sit together: what has happened, what is happening now, and what you can be part of next.
